Choral masterpieces of the eighteenth century, these two works for choir, soloists, orchestra and organ reach the sublime heights often associated with the large-scale works of Caldara and Haydn, the latter the brother of the world-famous Joseph and erstwhile chorister at St Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna.

Caldara’s ‘Stabat Mater’ written for the Viennese court chapel of Charles V, evokes from the outset profound melancholy and devout emotion. Haydn’s beautiful mass is sublime in its simple and at times direct expressiveness.
