Summary

A young Hull boxer, Karen, who has been inspired by Barbara Butterick’s story uses it to highlight some of her own struggles.

The two stories are intertwined and highlight the problems faced by a female boxer in the 1940’s and 50’s juxtaposed with contemporary issues in the sport. Karen idolises Barbara as she epitomises the courage and tenacity needed to break through the glass ceiling of a male dominated sport. After all, everyone needs a hero! The play follows the travails of both characters on a numerous and fascinating journey.

Single Story Theatre’s new one-woman play tells the story of a world champion whose tenacity and skill took her to the top of her profession.
