Industry. Innovation. Change.

The northern landscape is one that has been shaped by a constant sense of motion. From Manchester to Teesside, and from rural to urban, all locations included in this wide-ranging bracket have been a locus for social and political upheaval; its roots run deep. However, a combined population of 14.9 million, a collective, singular sense of identity is no longer reflective of the area’s complexities. Its locality is spreading, and its influence is perpetually evolving – entering new realms, crossing borders and inspiring the next generation.

Film is a mechanism through which to connect, engage and celebrate with all things northern. From narratives based in inner-city neighbourhoods, to stories that draw parallels with other countries, these unique screenings offer personal perspectives in a universal world. Be inspired by the breadth of emotions, be humbled by each film’s cultural resonance and leave with the notion that land is more than a geographical location; it’s a hive of activity, a platform of creativity and a state of mind. The question arises: what does it mean to be Northern in a globalised world?

The Festival pass includes all four programmes:

Substance Film Festival: Award-Winning Films

Fri 1 Dec | 7:30pm | Vue Cinema Hull | Cert 15 | 90 mins

Substance Film Festival: Award Winning Films is a programme of films that looks at some of the Winners from the Aesthetica Short Film Festival from Best Drama and Best Documentary to Best Comedy and Best Music Video. Some of these films have gone on to win Oscars and BAFTAs. A delightful programme of shorts all with connections to the North of England.

Substance Film Festival: Place Is A State Of Mind

Sat 2 Dec | 7:30pm | Vue Cinema Hull | Cert 15 | 90 mins

Place is a State of Mind is a collection of shorts that challenge the notion of place. From a Dutch businessman on the verge of a breakdown and an elderly couple recalling their youth to understanding how sound accentuates a place and then back to the sea. This collection of films reminds viewers that place can physical or abstract and is defined by a series of memories. Ultimately place is what you make of it.

Substance Film Festival: Human Stories

Mon 4 Dec | 7:30pm | Vue Cinema Hull | Cert 15 | 90 mins

Human Stories is a selection of films rooted in the shared human experience. From the oldest married couple in the world to a portrait of a life, these narratives look at communal rights-of-passage that transcend place and remind us of our humanity and how individual stories help us to relate to one another in a complex world.

Substance Film Festival: Complex Relationships

Tues 5 Dec | 7:30pm | Vue Cinema Hull | Cert 15 | 90 mins

Complex Relationships features stories about fathers and sons, the last colliery in Yorkshire and a young girl struggling with her upbringing. These films look at the breadth and dynamic nature of family relationships. They also offer a glimpse into the intricacy of the domestic whilst underpinning identity in the modern age from a northerner in London to a family in crisis.

Each film from the Substance Film Festival programme will include a hosted Q&A and panel discussion around the theme of the film programme with the filmmakers and special guests.
