- Peter Maxwell Davies – The Kestrel Paced Round the Sun for solo flute (1975)
- Toru Takemitsu – Voice for solo flute (1971)
- Kaija Saariaho – NoaNoa for flute and electronics (1992)
- Mark Slater – Fiery Verticals for flute and electronics (world première)
These works all explore ways that the sound of the flute can be transformed or built up into complex multi-layered textures.
The music of this programme offers a glimpse into an evocative soundworld, that ranges from blurred and diffuse timbres to layers of dense technical complexity. The inclusion of live electronics opens up infinite possibilities for manipulation of the flute’s sound.
In NoaNoa, Saariaho uses electronics to superimpose the flute upon itself while, in Fiery Verticals, Slater sets the flute and electronics against one another in an antagonistic battle for space.
