Periphery II brings together a body of work created towards the end of 2016 for Periphery, a solo exhibition of the work of Clare Holdstock held at Lady Beck, Leeds. The works are large-scale and include a series of geometric sculptures and casts. Each work was made in a small series using everyday materials such as mdf, plywood, concrete, steel and cellophane. In the works, these basic materials are transformed through the use of colour, pattern and shape.
As well as playfully exploring materiality, these works map out observations about the history of 20th century design and architecture which are sometimes visible in urban environments. In Periphery II a new site-specific work responding to the gallery space at Ground in Hull will also be revealed. This piece cements the themes explored through Periphery: materiality and transience of objects within man-made 21st century landscapes.
