Safe spaces get a bad rep. Often misunderstood by the type of people who benefit from them, they have become associated with curbing free speech and “PC” culture.

gal-dem, a magazine and creative collective run exclusively by women of colour, is coming to Hull to show our interpretation of a safe space as part of Where Are We Now?.

Join us in the gal-dem black girls’ bedroom at Früit for an afternoon of discussion, takeaway poetry, spoken word, art, photography and music. It’s going to be lit.

Where Are We Now? will be a summer festival like no other: a gathering of time-served trouble-makers, spoken word rebels, artistic mavericks & leftfield music pioneers. We’ll be converging on the city of Hull to ask of today’s counter-culture the soaring, searching question with which David Bowie kissed us goodbye.
