Before becoming an Oscar-winning filmmaker, Minghella served a long apprenticeship as a television screenwriter. We are proud to present a selection of his television work, with thanks to the BFI National Television Archive.

Living with Dinosaurs (1990). Continuing Minghella’s successful collaboration with the Jim Henson Organization which began with his work on Jim Henson’s The Storyteller, this one-off drama tells the story of a young boy, Dom, who copes with the difficulties of his family life with the help of his stuffed dinosaurs. Living with Dinosaurs is also one of Minghella’s many collaborations with Juliet Stevenson, who takes a leading role as Dom’s mother.

Dance House: Mosaic (1992). In this short, jointly funded by the BBC and the Arts Council, Juliet Stevenson and dancer Lauren Potter perform a montage written by Anthony Minghella and choreographed by Jonathan Lunn.

What If It’s Raining? (1986). The first episode of a Channel 4 mini-series adapted by Minghella from his play of the same name, described by a Guardian writer as ‘a tender, sensitive play while also being the most no-bones-about-it account of adultery I have seen on TV’.

Smith and Jones in Small Doses (1989). Minghella’s contribution to this series of short sketches tells the story of a man who, worn down by being second at everything he does in his life, is determined to be the first to throw himself off a newly-built bridge.
