Dr Catherine Wynne shares her knowledge on Elizabeth Butler – Victorian Britain’s leading war artist.

Butler’s “The Return from Inkerman” (1877) Crimean War painting is currently in the Ferens Art Gallery, is known as one of her most famous works and was painted at the height of her fame in the late 1870s.

Lady Butler (born Elizabeth Thompson) overcame the obstacles of gender to become an artist and she forged a career in an area (historical art) that was highly unusual for a woman.
