Hull Independent Cinema and Yorkshire Silents presents: Safety Last! with live score
Fred Newmeyer / Sam Taylor | 1923 | USA | Cert U | 70 mins
One of the most famous of all silent film comedies, Safety Last! features Harold Lloyd’s most celebrated, daredevil stunt as he climbs a twelve storey department store building with his bare hands. The shot of him dangling dangerously from the second hand of the clock face is perhaps silent film’s most famous. Laugh-loud funny and astonishingly daring, this is visual comedy at its absolute zenith and a great introduction to silent film.
“Harold Lloyd manages to make the characters sympathetic enough to carry the audience’s concern on his journey of crazy stunts and mishaps. One of the best of this era.” David Parkinson, Empire Magazine
This screening of Safety Last! will be accompanied by a live piano score by Jonathan Best. Jonathan has worked with the National Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company, English National Opera, Opera North, Royal Opera, Cameron Mackintosh, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, City of London Sinfonia and Aurora. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a Clore Leadership Fellow.
