Hull Independent Cinema and Yorkshire Silents presents: Phantom of the Opera with Live Score
Rupert Julian | 1925 | USA | Cert PG | 107 mins
Deep under the Paris Opera House runs a dark lake, and beneath it lives the Phantom. Alone and longing for company, one day he hears a beautiful soprano voice singing and swears to possess the singer. The story has been told many times, but never as powerfully and spectacularly as this 1925 silent film. Starring the great Lon Chaney and filmed on some of the largest and most detailed sets ever created in Hollywood, The Phantom of the Opera is silent film on an epic scale.
HIC are delighted to be working once again with Yorkshire Silents, organisers of the Yorkshire Silent Film Festival. This screening of Phantom of the Opera will be accompanied by a live piano score by Jonathan Best, whose playing for our screening of Metropolis last year was such a hit with the audience. Jonathan is one of the UK’s leading silent film musicians, performing all over the UK.
“The atmosphere matches Chaney’s performance perfectly. His grotesque appearance is achieved with wires, cotton balls, and eye-dilating chemicals, but his character, as usual, is animated from within.” Keith Phipps, AV Club
