Laurent Cantet (Cannes Palme d’Or winner for The Class) here returns to top form by mixing social relevance and tension as his characters, all high school students off for the summer, attend a workshop for fictional writing headed by well-known French novelist Olivia (Marina Foïs). The multiculturalism is, like most of France, represented in the group with Arabic, African, and Spanish among the dozen or so students attending the workshop. The main character, Antoine (Matthieu Lucci), is a white-nationalist-minded teenager who, in his free time, watches right-wing videos about guns and reflects on France’s lost cultural identity. Olivia soon finds herself fascinated by the angry-eyed Antoine, because, for all of his troubling views, he happens to be an astute literary critic.

‘A stunningly authentic portrait of French youth today; their class, racial and occupational concerns.’Variety

A BFI/Film Hub North/Hull 2017/University of Hull event, presented as part of French Film Festival UK 2017.

The BFI is funding ‘Transformative Film Culture For hull’, as part of its National Lottery-funded BFI Film Audience Network and led by its lead partner BFI Film Hub North. Delivered through Hull2017 and by Hull Independent Cinema and a unique partnership of film festival, educational and archive partners from across the north, the film programme will bring a packed programme of more than 400 screenings, one-off events and film festivals throughout the year to Hull and the region. The programme reflects the BFI’s activities across the UK to bring film to audiences where there is less opportunity for them to experience and engage in film, and to support local film networks and audience initiatives. There will be much to explore, celebrate and enjoy.
