Summary

Donny McCaslin – sax, Jason Lindner – keyboards, Tim Lefebvre – bass and Mark Guiliana – drums

McCaslin’s been a talked-about presence in New York jazz circles since the early 1990s when he was playing with Gil Evans and in the fusion group Steps Ahead, beginning his long association with Maria Schneider. With 11 albums and three Grammy nominations under his belt, he became a household name in 2016 when he collaborated with David Bowie on what was to be his final album, Blackstar.

McCaslin’s music is ambitious but accessible. It’s unapologetically the work of someone who grew up listening to rock on the radio. And with recent albums including covers of Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada, he’s bringing influences from electronic music into the mix too. This is the new face of jazz fusion, following in the footsteps of pioneers like Weather Report and Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters.

Early booking advised.

“This is the powerful left-field New York jazz band that played on David Bowie’s Blackstar. Donny McCaslin’s dedication to Bowie represents that niche of rock and hip-hop-influenced jazz. A formidable set with a darkly seductive power.” – The Guardian
