Last year Hull said “come back to ours” as it celebrated becoming 2017 UK City of Culture. 23 other cities around the world, from Siberia to Mexico, China to Iran and Belarus to Italy also held City and Capital of Culture titles.
From its origins in 1985 to the new titles awarded this year in Slovakia and the London Boroughs, the Capital of Culture concept has gone global.
Steve Green (Hull BSc; Econ 1972), president of the Students Union (1974/75) and former chair of the selection panel for the European Capitals of Culture, analyses the global programmes, explores successes and failures and identifies key lessons for legacies.
