Anthony Minghella is one of the most famous alumni of the University of Hull and a Hollywood legend. An Oscar-winning director, film and television producer, playwright and former lecturer, he left an astonishing legacy on screen and stage.

Join Minghella’s former colleagues at the University of Hull in celebrating his life and work with screenings of his award-winning films The Talented Mr. Ripley, The English Patient and Cold Mountain. (And treat yourself to the Minghella family’s gourmet ice cream while you’re at it.)

Anthony Minghella: Artworks In Progress

The display of artefacts, provided by Hull History Centre, will focus on two moments from the career of Anthony Minghella: the writing and production of his breakthrough play, Whale Music, and his celebrated production of Puccini’s opera Madame Butterfly.

Winner of 9 Academy Awards, including a Best Director Award for Minghella, this romantic drama, set during and before World War II and filmed on location in Italy and Tunisia, stars Ralph Fiennes, Juliette Binoche, Willem Dafoe and Kristin Scott Thomas.

The Talented Mr. Ripley

Matt Damon and Jude Law star in a tale of love, obsession and identity theft. Based on Patricia Highsmith’s novel, and filmed on location in Italy.

Cold Mountain

In mid-nineteenth century America, a wounded, deserting Confederate soldier journeys to return to his love.
