Community Brand Case Study: Wyke Sixth Form College

Sixth form college celebrates year of culture with epic program of events.

Wyke Sixth College on Bricknell Ave, in the West of the city, has always had a strong cultural identity but in 2017 this identity is stronger than ever before.

Part of our community brand family, Wyke is proudly joining in the 2017 celebrations with its own action-packed program of cultural events to celebrate Hull’s year in the spotlight.

The largest A Level provider in Hull and the East Riding, events planned for 2017 range from informal music performances to large scale productions and art exhibitions and themed events held during Made in Hull celebrated the talents of both Hull students and Hull-born artists.

Ahead of Radio 1s Big Weekend, in February students were given the opportunity to be part of the audience for a special Radio 1 live broadcast while creative writing and music students had the pleasure of working with multiple award-winning Hull musician Eliza Carthy to compose a song as part of the composers in residence.

In March, students dropped everything to read in celebration of the printed word as all of Wyke’s students read for 20 minutes from 9.50 to 10.10am, The Wyke Dance Troupe made it to the national final of a renowned dance competition and in Rock Against Racism Exhibition, a visually stunning retrospective exhibition reflecting Hull’s fight against racism, the original silkscreen posters, designed by Richard Lees, for Hull Rock Against Racism 1979-82, were displayed at the college.

A poetry competition, Poetry By Heart, invited students to recite a poem by heart while A Place to Land, a Paper Plane Production, a bittersweet comedy-drama by local playwright Jenny West, had a cast and crew made up of local people in higher education and youth training and employment.
