Why I volunteer: Don Knibb

Pioneer Volunteer Don explains why he couldn’t miss the chance to volunteer for Hull 2017.

After regretting not signing up for the volunteering programme for London 2012, I was determined not to let this opportunity pass by. It’s a fantastic opportunity for Hull and I wanted to help show the rest of the UK (and the world) what Hull has to offer.

As a Pioneer Volunteer I was involved in interviewing new volunteers at the Hull 2017 selection centres. The range of exceptional people who came in to interview absolutely took my breath away. I was really taken by people’s experiences, and I know that the next wave of volunteers to come through will clearly be very beneficial to the team.

It’s been interesting to get behind the scenes to look at how events work. I’ve learned that you have to be patient at some points!

I’ve definitely developed a taste for volunteering and I hope to keep volunteering after 2017.

It’s been a very positive experience, topped off with little treats that I hadn’t expected – like trips to the theatre. I’ve already recruited several friends to the volunteering programme and recommend it to everyone who’s interested. I’ve definitely developed a taste for volunteering and I hope to keep volunteering after 2017.

The team have really jelled and developed a social spirit. I’m delighted that I decided to apply; we’re making a great start on promoting Hull and I absolutely feel part of the development of the volunteer programme. I’m part of a creative writing group, and through my experience volunteering I was able to encourage them to get involved with 2017 and apply for funding for an outreach programme.
