Opera North seeks singing stars in Hull

An upcoming taster session with Opera North offers local youngsters the opportunity to hone their musical talent.

The city’s young voices now have access to the direction of professional performers from award-winning Opera North, as the company launches its latest Opera North Children’s Chorus.

Hot on the heels of Leeds and Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Hull is only the third city to have a children’s chorus established with the company. Hull’s chorus, run in collaboration with the University of Hull, is open to all young people aged 8 – 12 years – and crucially, no previous singing experience is needed.

Know anyone that fits the bill? Whether they’re a confirmed songbird or looking to try something new, Opera North is inviting every interested child to a free taster session on Tue 30 Jan.

This introductory workshop gives everyone the chance to get involved with singing exercises and games whilst getting to grips with how Opera North structure their rehearsals. Plus, if anyone’s really taken with singing, there’s an opportunity to audition for the group on the night.

Jacquie Cameron, Opera North Education Director said “Launching an Opera North Children’s Chorus in Hull celebrates and builds on the creativity and talent which the city demonstrated so successfully last year during its tenure as the UK City of Culture 2017.

“By coming along to the taster session, young singers will get the chance to meet the Opera North team and get a feel for the Children’s Chorus and the opportunities it offers.

“We hope that the choir will help to inspire young people to continue to make the most of their musical talents in a friendly, supportive environment, while forging new friendships and developing a lasting passion for singing and performance.”

For those who sign up and are selected, future sessions will focus on the chorus’ singing. Professional directors and movement specialists will teach the group new skills in drama and stagecraft too, working towards public performance.

The first production is set to be Seasons of Love, a story of love and loss based on traditional folk songs and tales. On top of that members will have the chance to perform alongside the Chorus of Opera North in the summer.

Children’s choruses elsewhere have performed in prestigious venues including at the Spitalfields Music Winter Festival and at the Southbank in London. Members have gone on to further their singing career by joining Opera North Young Voice and Opera North Youth Chorus too – plenty of opportunity for Hull’s young singers!

If you know anyone that would like to attend the free taster session (Tue 30 Jan, 5pm) register their interest in advance with youthensembles@operanorth.co.uk.
