Meet the very lovely Maureen Leathley
Maureen is a 96-year-old former prima ballerina who has been dancing since the age of 10. Starting out at a tiny dance school in Hull, Maureen went on to become an associate of the Royal Academy of Dance in London.
She remembers how excited the dancers were to read the critics’ reviews, the butterflies and anxious nerves before she danced and flocking to the pub with her fellow dancers after performing.
“My mum went out to work to pay for my dancing – that was absolutely wonderful, it was lovely,” says Maureen.
We spoke to Maureen at Endike Community Care Centre in north Hull – where she still gets up to dance – to discover the impact ballet has had on her life.
