As the countdown to Christmas begins, we list the events to get you feeling festive.

SUBSTANCE LIVE: THE FUTURE OF THE NORTH

As our Substance festival continues, Substance Live celebrates the future of the North with an evening of music from some of the most innovative and forward-thinking artists, hosted by BBC Radio 6 Music and BBC Radio 3’s Elizabeth Alker.

Get ready for the politically charged post-punk of Nadine Shah; the psychedelic dream pop of Jane Weaver; an electronic and brass band intergalactic odyssey courtesy of Hannah Peel; the performance art punk of Lone Taxidermist; all female four piece PINS; sister doom duo Chambers and the homegrown freak folk of The Dyr Sister.

What’s Christmas without the classic feel good films we all watch each year?

Countdown to Christmas from the comfort of your own car with a packed programme of festive films, including The Muppet’s Christmas Carol, It’s A Wonderful Life, Elf and many more – you’d be a Grinch to miss it!

BP CULTURAL VISIONS LECTURE SERIES: IAN BLATCHFORD, DIRECTOR OF THE SCIENCE MUSEUM GROUP

Rounding off the BP Cultural Visions Lecture Series is Ian Blatchford, Director of the Science Museum Group, who will look at the journeys taken and obstacles faced by some of the UK’s leading cultural visionaries.

CHRISTMAS HULL STREET FOOD NIGHTS

Zebedee’s Yard

Hull’s Street Food Nights are back!

With around 35 local and independent food and drink vendors taking over Zebedee’s Yard, you’re in for the ultimate foodie extravaganza. There’ll be a brass band on hand to play your favourites Christmas tunes and a variety of festive products on sale, so don’t miss out.

FESTIVAL CONCERT

Thurs 14 Dec, 7.30pm (£3 – £6)
University of Hull

The University of Hull presents a classical music concert featuring performances by staff-led ensembles including the University Camerata and Jazz Æsthetic.

The concert will feature recognisable scores such as Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante, Quilter’s 3 Shakespeare Songs and Nicolai’s Merry Wives of Windsor Overture before ending with a performance from Jazz Æsthetic. The ultimate evening for any classical music fan.

PETER PAN

Hull New Theatre

Pantomime season is upon us, and this adventure tale comes to Hull New Theatre with the biggest line-up in the newly developed venue’s history, including Darren Day, Brendan Sheerin, Charlie Hardwick, Jonny Labey, Sid Sloane and Ricky K.

Expect spectacular high-flying effects, an unmissable underwater 3D sequence, a live orchestra, laugh-out-loud comedy and bundles of audience participation. This pantomime has all the ingredients for a theatrical treat that the whole family will enjoy.

Stendhal Syndrome is a group show from Kingston Art Group featuring work from everyone – its studio members, associate members, the studio waiting list, previous exhibitors, friends and even friends of friends.

Stendhal syndrome is a disorder that causes rapid heartbeat, dizziness, fainting, confusion and even hallucinations when an individual is exposed to too much culture and art. There’ll be plenty of art on sale here, and chairs will be provided in case it all gets a bit much!
