It’s the countdown to Christmas! Check out some of our festive cultural highlights coming up this week.

Painting Power: The Art of Terence Cuneo

This new exhibition curated by Science Museum Group Director, Ian Blatchford, and the Chief Curator of the National Railway Museum, Andrew McLean, takes a fresh look at Terence Cuneo’s incredible drawings for the Ministry of Information during the Second World War.

Drawing on the Science Museum Group’s rich collection and loans from across the UK, the exhibition explores depictions of industrial power, sovereign and state.

Live Nativity

Queen Victoria Square, Trinity Square & Hull Minster

A colourful retelling of the Nativity and is set to draw in crowds on Saturday, with a star-studded local cast (including Look North’s Peter Levy) and real camels, sheep, and a donkey!

The action will start from ‘Nazareth’ – the monument in Queen Victoria Square – at 1pm where Mary will be called by the angel Gabriel to give birth to Jesus in Bethlehem – Trinity Square, where a large nativity set will be erected. Here you can also catch communal carols led by the Nativity Praise choir and the Humberside Police brass band and meet the animals up close after the performance ends.

The Changing Rooms of Christmas

Starting with a meal in the Great Hall at the foot of a stunning Christmas tree, this festive theatre-in-promenade show devised by Bridlington Spa will have you exploring room to room of Burton Constable Hall, a magnificent Elizabethan manor house. Discover musical performances within many fine rooms, transformed with beautiful seasonal displays, stunning festive decorations and garlands.

Middle Child’s annual pantomime is an unmissable part of the festive season for families here in Hull.

This year Middle Child present a riotous take on the classic fairy tale, Cinderella, with live music, ultimate chaos and the chance to make as much noise as you can – boo, hiss!

Adult only performances run at 10pm on selected dates.

We Watch Films: The Fellowship of the Ring

The first instalment of Peter Jackson‘s epic fantasy trilogy, Lord of the Rings takes to the screen at Cineworld this weekend.  The Fellowship of the Ring follows the perilous quest of Frodo Baggins and his eight companions to destroy the powerful One Ring and save Middle Earth from the Dark Lord Sauron.

Hull Independent Cinema: The Killing of a Sacred Deer

Hull Independent Cinema presents a gripping psychological thriller The Killing of a Sacred Deer at VUE Princes Quay.  A charismatic surgeon, is forced to make an unthinkable sacrifice when the behaviour of a teenage boy he has taken under his wing turns sinister and his life begins to fall apart.

Where Do We Go From Here? Artist Commissions

Humber Street Gallery asked four Hull-based collectives (Kingston Art Group, Hack and Host, REDboard and Ground) to respond to the question ‘where do we go from here?’ the results are interesting artistic interventions across Trinity Market.
