Get up and dance – join an (In)visible Dancing performance this month

Acclaimed dance company Protein to animate Hull city centre with dance, music and drama.

One of Britain’s most captivating dance companies, Luca Silvestrini’s Protein, will take to the streets of Hull this month alongside a team of local dancers and musicians, performing their acclaimed outdoor show (In)visible Dancing from 23 June – 1 July.

This critically-lauded outdoor event has been specially re-commissioned for the people of Hull as part of the Hull 2017 Creative Communities Programme and will integrate both professional and community-based performers. Emerging over the course of several days, (In)Visible Dance begins as a series of small pop up, incidental events, with each event increasing in size and choreographic complexity across the duration of the project. Developing from random happenings in the street, the final piece will be a full-scale theatrical dance performance with live music.

Performances will feature dance artists, boxing and capoeira, plus a host of Hull dance and performance groups, including O’Connor Academy of Irish Dance, Kingston Swing Lindy Hop Group, Tango Hull and local street dance crew, Horizon.

The event finishes with a finale flashmob performance in Jameson Street on Saturday 1 July at 3pm, where Hull residents and passers-by are invited and encourage to join in. The finale will bring together more than 100 performers, from complete beginners and those of any dance ability.

Want to join in? Flashmob rehearsals take place after a number of the street performances (*indicated below) and are led by Protein’s professional dancers.

Professional dancer Jon Beney has been instrumental in gathering local groups to participate in the nine-day extravaganza. As a company ambassador for Protein, he said: “This show is fantastic as it offers each city it visits a chance to show off many local talented dance groups from salsa to break dancing and ballroom to tango, to name just a few. This year’s special edition for Hull will not only have live local musicians but performers from other disciplines such as boxing and cheerleading! (In)visible Dancing gives a chance for everyone to get involved even if you’ve never danced before. And the best thing is that it’s absolutely free to watch, and to join in.”

Speaking about the company’s participation in Hull UK City of Culture 2017, Protein’s Company Director, Luca Silvestrini said: “We are really excited to contribute to the UK City of Culture 2017 celebrations in Hull, and to renew ties with the region. We are looking forward to working with Hull’s practicing artists and the next generation of creatives in the city.”

Martin Green, director at Hull UK City of Culture 2017, added: “(In)visible Dancing is going to turn the city into a performance playground, animating the streets of Hull as never seen before. We’re all very excited to see how each performance progresses and involves the people who live in, work in and visit the city. It’s definitely going to be something that must not be missed.”
