Cultural Highlights: 24 Feb – 2 Mar

We’re taking inspiration from across the globe as we head into March, with Afro-Caribbean-infused nightlife, Italian opera and a gritty play set in Boston, USA.

VAMP: UPCYCLING WORKSHOP

With Mother’s Day looming, why not create a handmade gift to give to the special lady in your life? In this workshop run by Traenherhus on Hull’s picturesque High Street, you’ll be provided with a wire lampshade which you will strip, bind or paint, before creating decorative items to wire, sew, string and attach onto the lampshade throughout the day. Not only will you learn something new, your creation could be so good, you might just want to keep it for yourself.

Opera North Whistle Stop Opera - Don Giovanni.

If you’ve never been to an opera and would like to dip your toes in gently, then Opera North’s Whistle Stop Operas are what you need. This bite-sized version of Mozart’s timeless drama Don Giovanni tells a dramatic tale of seduction and death, following a cruel man who lives life to the fullest, regardless of the consequences. A lively cast of singers and a talented accordionist will take you through the story, and there’s even an interactive element for you to sink your teeth into.

Double BAFTA and Olivier Award winning John Godber and Jane Thornton star in this new comedy about life, love and staying on your bike. Having met at a bereavement group, retired miner Don and former private school teacher Carol thought they’d found a new beginning with each other. A tandem bike ride through Europe tests their budding romance, and we join them on their hilarious and heartfelt journey as they navigate through the past, debate the present and worry about the future.

East Riding Theatre

East Riding Theatre take on this award-winning play exploring life on the breadline in America. When single mother Margie is fired from her job at the dollar store and at risk of losing everything, her only hope seems to be a decent win at the bingo. Hearing that her old flame is in town, Margie takes her chance to see if he can throw her a lifeline. As buried secrets are unearthed and old wounds are opened, we watch as Margie battles to pull through, wondering if life itself is like a game of bingo and where on earth all of the good people are.

 

EAST RIDING 21ST OPEN ART EXHIBITION

The annual Ferens Open Exhibition kicked off on 17 Feb, and East Riding’s Open Art Exhibition is hot on its heels as it celebrates its 21st birthday. Showcasing artistic talent from around the region, the exhibition offers up a delightfully diverse range of work. Come down for a nosey, and don’t forget to nominate your favourite piece for the People’s Choice award.
