Whether or not you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day – there’s something for everyone to “love” in our cultural highlights guide this week.

Hull City Hall

Building on Hull’s top class array of comedy gigs in 2017, Joel Dommett is the latest internationally-renowned comedian to grace the stage at Hull City Hall. Expect infectious energy and limitless enthusiasm from the star of 2016’s I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here and Sky1’s Bring The Noise.

CULT CINEMA SUNDAY: EMPIRE RECORDS

Putting the ‘cult’ in the City of Culture is the fantastic Cult Cinema Sunday at Früit. With a perfect mix of Thieving Harry’s food, craft beers, a free film quiz, prize raffle and custom made alternative movie posters, this month’s film offering is Empire Records. Following the lives and loves of the manager of an Empire Records store, this hilarious comedy-drama will have you laughing out loud.

THE LOVELY EGGS

The Adelphi Club

Hot off their rammed and raucous Autumn tour, Northern psychedelic punks The Lovely Eggs play The Adelphi Club ahead of the launch of their forthcoming album This Is Eggland. Sample what’s in store with their brand new single, I Shouldn’t Have Said That, which is out now, with support on the night coming from comedian Phil Jupitus (in his guise as Porky the Poet).

HAMLET

Hull New Theatre

Experience Hamlet – the searing tragedy of murder and revenge – at Hull New Theatre. Following a critically-acclaimed run in Stratford-upon-Avon in 2016, The Royal Shakespeare Company tell the tale of a student called home from university to find his life turned upside down. Rising star Paapa Essiedu plays the title role in a contemporary take on this Shakespearian classic.

BACK TO OURS

Venues across the city

If you haven’t heard already, the first Back To Ours of 2018 kicks off this week with a stellar line-up. Taking place at venues right on your doorstep, this family-friendly festival boasts magical moments for all ages to enjoy – from Hotel Paradiso, taking us back to the 1940s with jaw-dropping acrobatics and slapstick comedy, to The Amazing Bubble Man‘s awe-inspiring tricks and our Picture House film screenings, featuring clay animation workshops.

And for the grown-ups, we’ve just announced a special show from The Libertines’ Carl Barât (with support from LIFE) on 17 Feb. Tickets going on sale from 10am on 10 Feb in North Point Shopping Centre and online from 6pm on 12 Feb. See you there!

TIPTOE

The Ropery Hall

In conjunction with Jazz North’s Northern Line programme, Tiptoe brings intimate, soulful earth music delivered in an artfully unassuming style. Tiptoe’s music blends captivating voices and a grounded electro-acoustic core – a resonating sound not to be missed.

HOUNDS OF HULL

What better way to celebrate the start of Chinese New Year of the Dog, than with the Hounds of Hull exhibition at KAG. Featuring a selection of images taken of our favourite pooches in iconic Hull based locations, this exhibition is definitely one for the animal lovers.
