This City Belongs to Everyone: Launching Seasons 2 & 3

Freetown, capital of the West African Republic of Sierra Leone, is playing a part in Hull’s celebrations as UK City of Culture 2017.

Today marks the launch of Freetown’s version of This City Belongs to Everyone. The original film is widely credited for helping to propel Hull’s bid for City of Culture Status to success in 2013. The release of this frame by frame remake also marks the launch of Hull 2017’s Roots & Routes and Freedom seasons.

Nova Studios made the Hull film, and it is Nova that has been instrumental in involving the people living in Freetown in the City of Culture celebrations throughout this year.

Alan Jones, Director of Nova Studios said: “Freetown and Hull have been twinned for nearly 40 years, and we have been visiting and working in Freetown for ten years, we felt it was important that Freetown was a part of Hull’s big year,  and that the people of Freetown benefitted in some way from our celebrations.”

African Film-maker and youth activist Lansana Mansaray (AKA Barmmy Boy), a friend and close colleague of Nova Studios, has made the Freetown version of the original film.

Barmmy said: “When I come to Hull people are always interested in what life is like for us and what Freetown is like. Remaking This City Belongs to Everyone means people can get a feel for Freetown, and how beautiful it is. We believe that the film can help our city, like the Hull film helped Hull. It will be used to bring in tourists and to help businesses as well as creating a sense of pride.”
