Breaks, beats ‘n’ hip-hop skills for all the family

Free Community Arts Jam is a first for east Hull estate.

Children and their families are invited to show off their creativity at a free celebration of urban culture in Hull’s Greatfield Estate.

Community Arts Jam, on Saturday 29 July at the Shelley Avenue Community and Sports Centre, will be the first of its kind to be held on the east Hull estate.

The project is part of the Creative Communities Programme and is being delivered by Hull-based charity Child Dynamix.

Paul Clark, lead worker for the event and youth worker at Child Dynamix, said: “It’s going to be a brilliant day. Everything is coming together, with the final artists signed up. We are doing workshops with young people from across the city in the lead-up to the event and they will be performing on the day. It will be fantastic to see.”

The family event, which starts at 1pm, will celebrate urban culture through young people’s creativity.

There will be breakdancing, drumming, graffiti, DJ scratching and beat-making, as well as a hip-hop history experience and rapping experiences.

The event will include young people taking to the stage with a variety of different talents including DJing, rap and dance.

People are invited to watch the activities and performances, or even get involved.

There will be workshops for all ages run by artists from the local area. Scrapstore is providing hands-on crafts with themes inspired by hip-hop and freedom.

Martin Green, CEO and director of Hull 2017, said: “It is really important that Hull 2017 allows young people to get creative and unlock talents they might not even know they have. Hopefully, events like this will unearth and encourage the city’s next big stars.”

This is a non-alcohol event and children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Tickets are free and available to book online.
