Back To Ours has launched the line-up for its next festival, which will take place during the May half term holidays.
We caught up with Back To Ours Director Louise Yates to find out more:
You have a new look for May, tell us more?
Back To Ours was originally created as part of the Hull 2017 programme. We’re now one of 21 Arts Council-funded Creative People and Places networks across the country, so for May we’re sporting a fresh new image but still with the same ethos; to bring high-quality acts to the most everyday of places in the heart of Hull communities.
You chose to launch your May programme on a bus, what’s that all about?
What’s more Back To Ours than putting a load of great performers together on a bus and hitting the streets of Hull? We’ll be popping up where we’re least expected and surprising people. It’s the essence of what Back To Ours is all about.
Tell us more about the festival line up
This is our fifth festival, so we know what people will love. There’ll be aerial extravaganzas and incredible stories told on the screen and stage. We’ve got some really great shows that we’re confident not only bring a bit of magic to half-term, but also a lot of laughs for the whole family.
Handa’s Surprise is a really wonderful, popular children’s book. It’ll be brought to life in a performance with puppetry, live music and song.
We’ll be celebrating 250 years of Circus with Casus who are Australia’s hottest young circus company. They’re incredible and I can’t wait to see them perform right here in Hull.
Picture House will be back with two stunning films: Song of the Sea and Kubo and the Two Strings. And if that wasn’t enough, we’ll have The Coral here performing what I have no doubt will be another unmissable gig at North Point Shopping Centre.
Not forgetting The Secret Gig and children’s favourite The Little Gardener, which will see the inside of a greenhouse become a stage.
So there is a lot to look forward to!
The acclaimed festival has brought diverse acts to the most surprising of venues, should we expect the same this half-term?
Yes! Up to now we’ve transformed shopping centres, schools, community centres and clubs into spaces for live music, magic shows, circus acts and film screenings. This half-term we’ll be bringing shows to three new venues, The Octagon, The Avenues Centre and the North Bransholme Community Centre. We’ve seen first-hand that with a bit of imagination anywhere can be a stage and it’s exciting to see acts perform in the heart of our communities.
What are your Community Hubs?
The Hubs are a starting point for communities to talk about what they’d like to see produced and commissioned within the city. We want to support local communities and artists to take the reins and make their own decisions on commissioning and delivering inspirational work. If there’s something people particularly want, we’ll work alongside them to make it a reality.
Can local artists also get involved in Back To Ours?
Absolutely. We’ve also just opened our new commissioning programme to artists across the city, encouraging them to push boundaries and come up with new and exciting ideas.
Are you finding that there is an increased appetite for culture since Hull’s year as the UK City of Culture 2017?
Hull 2017 was an incredible, unique year for the city which did so much for our communities but it was only the beginning. We’re excited about what’s in store this year but we must all now work together to build on last year’s success and find a level of sustainability. It’s not only cultural organisations who have a role to play but artists, businesses, the council and other non-cultural organisations to work together and with our communities to help nurture the wonderful impact of 2017.
How can people get tickets?
