Assemble Fest: Our Street Our Stage

Discover Assemble Fest’s all-singing, all-dancing finale for 2017.

On 3 June, Newland Avenue’s annual theatre extravaganza Assemble Fest will come alive with show-stopping performances from the best local theatre companies in unlikely spaces. Think puppet shows in cafés, a scientific demonstration in a nightclub and a comic musical chase through the streets.

Rounding off the festival is Our Street Our Stage, an extra special performance for 2017 that will tell the story of Newland Avenue through the eyes of the community that call it home. Using powerful dance, music and awe-inspiring installations, the piece will celebrate the things that make Newland so unique, from its diverse population to its quirky colloquialisms and hub of local businesses.

No stone has been left unturned in the quest to uncover Newland Avenue’s rich history, with several trips to Hull History Centre and long conversations with residents, many of whom will perform on the day.

We caught up with Festival Director Madeleine O’Reilly, musician Boff Whalley and theatre-maker Daniel Bye as they worked with a local community choir to pen their love song to Newland Avenue.

Our Street Our Stage will be kicking off at 7.30pm on 3 June at Clothes Factor car park as part of this year’s Assemble Fest. The event is free and unticketed, so just turn up and prepare to be amazed.
